Firmly in the line of the great gospel-rooted soul singers that stretches back to Sam Cooke, Green's is the voice that built the Hi Records label's reputation. The Reverend Al and producer/label boss Willie Mitchell kept the Southern soul flame burning in the 70s while others rushed onto the disco floor or enveloped themselves in grandiose arrangements.
With a house style as recognisable as that of Motown or Stax in the 60s thanks to drummers Al Jackson Jr and Howard Grimes, the Hodges brothers Teenie, Leroy and Charles, and Memphis horns Wayne Jackson and Andrew Love, Green was able to lay back against the sound and deliver beautiful soul readings of Lets Stay Together, I'm Still In Love With You, and Tired Of Being Alone.
