AVERAGE WHITE BAND - BBC review

Formed in 1971, its a bizarre sign of those far off times that the very thought of a Scottish soul band being able to cut it in a market that was predominantly black and American should lead them to adopt such a self-effacing name. Truth be told, the stew of horns, popping bass and heartfelt vocals was every inch the equal of their spiritual cousins across the Atlantic. Let's Go Round Again, a digital hoovering up of their choicest cuts from the glory years, is all the proof you need.  The band's first album is plundered here for You Got it and Person To Person; more soul gold, which was to be the trend over the next few years.  Cut the Cake's title track is also plundered here for You Got it and Person To Person; more soul gold, which was to be the trend over the next few years.  Their sound inevitably became more disco-fied as the decade wore on; Queen Of My soul being an early dance floor classic. As such the band's stock remained high in the States, allowing them to coast into the 80s on classics as tasty as Let's Go Round Again. Still performing to this day, this is a grade A funk collection. It's a timely reminder of how great soul can come from anywhere in the world

JANIS IAN

RADIO HEART FEATURING GARY NUMAN

Gary Numan was one of the major forerunners of the electronic era of the 80s, pioneering the way for acts such as Depeche Mode and Ultravox.  A long string of hits throughout the late 70s and early 80s, alongside his creative use of electronic instruments, gave him great kudos amongst the hip 80s scene.  His influence is still felt today, with many of his songs still being sampled by the likes of the Sugar Babes and Basement Jaxx.

Featuring as vocalist on Radio Heart, alongside Elton John on piano and Ray Cooper on guitar, Numan proves once again why he’s so highly considered amongst musicians and fans alike.

BT EXPRESS

The New York Funk-Soul scene of the 70s spawned many classic tracks, giving rise to what would eventually be known as Disco.  BT Express were central to this scene, creating groove classics still filling dance floors today.  Signed in 1974 to Sid Maurer’s Roadshow Records, they would go on to record many Top 40 hits, in both the Pop and R&B genres.  Their influence can still be felt today, with songs such as ‘Discotizer’ and ‘The House Is Smokin’’ being sampled by many of today’s coolest producers, including Hotspot and Above The Law.  These funky grooves are sure fire winners, capturing the imaginations of both young, and those who can remember ‘cutting some shapes’ to these classics first time around.

BOBBY DARIN

As one of the 50s and 60s shining stars, Bobby Darin’s hit making record was second to none.  Bursting onto the young Rock ‘n’ Roll scene in 1958 with a string of Number 1 UK Chart hits, which are still considered today as classics of that era.  Elevated to super-stardom, Darin continued his hit making throughout the 60s, alongside appearing in major Hollywood films ‘Come September’ and ‘Captain Newman, M.D,’ for which he was nominated for an Academy Award.  With numerous Grammy Awards to his name, Bobby Darin’s career has long been recognised as a force to be reckoned with.

FAIRPORT CONVENTION

Formed in 1967 in North London, Fairport Convention are often credited as being the first electric English-folk act.  Transforming from a style similar to that of the American West-Coast acts of the mid-60s to a style of their own, they paved the way for many British folk acts to find their way into the mainstream.  After 22 years of constant recording and touring, Fairport Convention played one final tour, entitled ‘Encore Encore.’  The record of the same name documenting this event is considered one of their finest records, containing both traditional and self-penned songs, this is a favourite of both fans and music critics.

GARY SHEARSTON

Australia may not be known for its musical heritage, but one artist has shown just what can be done from these humble musical beginnings.  Hailing from New South Wales, Gary Shearston was a huge star of the Australian folk scene throughout the 1960s.  After achieving notoriety with regional Australian hits ‘Sometime Lovin’’ (AUS #38) and ‘Sydney Town’ (AUS#9), his rise to international fame came with a version of the Cole Porter classic ‘I Get A Kick Out Of You,’ charting in the UK at #9.

Demon Music Group are proud to present Shearston’s back catalogue, with a long-term, all rights exclusive deal.

THE COOL NOTES

From the humble beginnings of the smallest venues to Top of the Pops and many other top T.V. appearances.  From Soul to Reggae, and back again, the ‘Notes have definitely been up and down the musical scale.

‘You’re Never Too Young’, originally released by the ‘Abstract Dance’ label, became the foundation of what we now know today as the British ‘Street Soul’ scene.  Becoming an underground smash and the biggest club hit in the spring/summer of 1984, ‘You’re Never Too Young’ put the Cool-Notes on the musical map and just fell short of the Top 40 at #42, completely without marketing and advertising.  Their follow-up singles ‘Spend The Night’ and ‘In Your Car’ cemented their position as one of the hottest Street Soul bands around, both charting in the UK Top 20

Demon are pleased to announce a long-term, all rights exclusive worldwide catalogue representation deal.

MAI TAI

Demon Music has signed an exclusive Worldwide catalogue deal for the mid-1980s dance group Mai Tai.
Mai Tai burst onto the scene in Spring 1985 with the international hit 'History', which reached No. 8 in the UK Singles Chart, as well as No. 3 in the US Billboard Hot Dance Chart. They also charted in the UK with 'Body And Soul' and 'Female Intuition', as well as scoring eight hits in their native Netherlands.

GILLAN

Demon Music Group are proud to announce the release of the remastered Ian Gillan recordings, consisting of his output during the 70s and 80s as the Ian Gillan Band & Gillan.  Ian Gillan was a member of Deep Purple from 1969 through 1973, appearing on the classic Deep Purple albums such as Fireball and Machine Head. During these years, he also portrayed Jesus Christ in the original version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar. After leaving Deep Purple, Gillan formed the Ian Gillan Band, and their initial sound had a distinct jazz-rock aspect, however this evolved into a more high powered hard rock sound as Gillan reformed the lineup and shortened the group's name to Gillan. With the release of Mr. Universe Ian Gillan was back in the UK charts and through several more lineup changes released a string of hit singles and successful albums including Glory Road, Future Shock, Double Trouble, and finally Magic.

BLUE

Formed and fronted by ex-Marmalade guitarist Nicholson, Blue signed to Elton John’s record label, Rocket Records in 1973, and released ‘Another Night Time Flight’ in 1977, and Fool’s party in 1979.  In 1977, Elton John was huge.  The British singer/composer had enjoyed one major hit after another in the 1970s, and was obviously destined to go down in history as one of the decades top rock/pop artists.  So when John co-produced Blue’s ‘Another Night Time Flight’ for his MCA-distributed Rocket label in 1977, it was a huge acknowledgement for the band.

‘Another Night Time Flight’ is a remarkable collection of soft rock.  Think of the more middle-of-the-road material that Elton John, the pre-disco Bee Gees, and former Beatles such as George Harrison and Paul McCartney recorded in the 1970s, and you will know where Blue is coming from on tunes like ‘Fantasy,’ ‘Bring Back The Love,’ ‘The Shepherd’ and the single ‘Capture Your Heart’ – a US hit.

MIKE NESMITH

Coming soon on Demon Music Group's Edsel label  -  the remastered Mike Nesmith recordings.  8 albums originally released on the Pacific Arts label, including the worldwide hit "Rio".  On the heels of "Rio's" chart success, Nesmith produced it's filmed accompaniment, and in the process helped set a precedent for modern day music videos.  Whilst appearing in Australia, he noted an interest in Top 40 TV shows that played video clips of performing artists.  Back in the US, Nesmith put together a 30 minute prototype Top 40 show called "Popclips".  Ultimately Nesmith sold both the show and the concept to Warner Amex and "Popclips" was reborn as the behemoth we now know as MTV.
